Jonquel Jones and the Connecticut Sun’s hot streak continued with a September 9 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks.
The first place Sun (23-6) rolled past the Sparks, 75-57 behind another strong performance by Jones. The 6’6’’ forward led the way with 21 points and 14 rounds, her 15th double-double for the season. She also finished with three steals and two blocked shots.
Sun center Brionna Jones added 15 points. DeWanna Bonner chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. Jasmine Thomas finished with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
With that win the Sun clinched a double round bye for the upcoming playoffs, which gives them the opportunity to scout their future opponent. The Sun have just three games remaining on the schedule.
Connecticut will look to keep building momentum when clashing with the Phoenix Mercury, September 11 at 10:00 p.m. Afterwards, there is a game against the New York Liberty on September 15 at 7:00 p.m. The regular season for the Sun finishes against the Atlanta Dream on September 19 at 1:00 p.m. live on NBA TV.
Over those final three games, Jones expected to solidify herself as the league’s Most Valuable Player. The Grand Bahama native remains among the top-five players (fourth place) in scoring, averaging 19.9 points per game, along with a league-leading 11 rebounds. She maintains a career-high in assists at 2.8 assists per game along with 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks per contest.
Jones is also a two time Eastern Conference Player of the Month for the 2021 season (May and August) and recently earned her fourth Eastern Conference Player of the Week honor.
