The West Grand Bahama Games rolled right along last week Friday and Saturday, May 10-11 with week two of their basketball action.
The high-octane play of the western district teams was on full display for residents of the Pinedale, Eight Mile Rock community to see as the Games’ location shifted to the Fritz Forbes/Buddy Hield Community Basketball Park that weekend. The games first tipped off at the Fletcher J. Lewis Basketball Court down in Hunter’s on May 4.
On Friday, May 10 The Russell/Martin Town crew continued to build momentum in the boys Under 13 division. Russell/Martin Town took no prisoners in their match-up against the team out of Pinedale. Russell/Martin Town rolled to a 34-11 victory. Barletta Rolle led Russell/Martin Town with 11 points. Kamron Thompson led Pinedale with six points.
In Under 17 action, Pinedale avenged their Under 13 boys’ defeat to Russell/Martin. Pinedale won that contest by a final score of 34-28. The top scorer for Pinedale was Bersil Cox who totaled 10 points. Jayden Pinder finished with 10 points for the Russel/Martin Town.
The action picked up that following day, May 11. In Under 13 play Pinedale defeated Pinder’s Point 18-12. Also, in Under 13 action Pinedale ousted the West End crew 34-21. In the final Under 13 game of the evening Russell/Martin Town defeated Pinder’s Point 29-17.
The evening continued with the Open Division teams taking the court. Pinedale survived a late rally from Bartlett Hill to win that contest 30-24. In the final Open tilt Hanna Hill narrowly edged West End 26-24.
In the Under 17 Division Russell/Martin Town out-lasted Pinder’s Point 29-20. The final contest of the evening featured Bartlett Hill taking on Pinedale. Both teams went down to the wire in that match but Bartlett Hill were the eventual winners with the 35-31 victory.
Th action-packed day at the Fritz Forbes/Buddy Hield Community Park was also highlighted by some of the mothers getting in on the action. In the spirit of Mother’s Day some of outstanding moms took part in a Free Throw competition, with a specially made Mother’s Day cake on the line courtesy of Yummies Bakery, Eight Mile Rock. The mother to hit the most free throws was declared the winner; and that winner turned out to be none other than the Chairman of Pinder’s Point Township - Jackie Russell.
This coming Friday and Saturday (May 17-18) the Wesley “Tanka” Williams Park, Jones Town Eight Mile Rock will play host to this week’s basketball contests.
On Friday, in Under 13 action Sea Grape will take on Russell/Martin Town at 6:00 p.m., followed by Jones Town taking on Pindedale at 6:30 p.m. Continuing on, in the Under 17 division Hannah Hill will face Pinedale at 7:00 p.m. Shortly after Russell/Martin Town will go up against Sea Grape at 7:30 p.m. The Open Division that day includes Bartlett Hill taking on Jones Town at 9:00 p.m., followed by Pinedale squaring off against Hanna Hill.
Saturday will feature a full slate of games. First, in the Under 13 Division, West End will face Pindedale at 4:00 p.m., followed by Holmes Rock taking on Russell/Martin Town at 4:30 p.m. and Pinder’s Point facing off against Jones Town at 5:00 p.m.
The Under 17 Division schedule of games include Russell and Martin Town versus Sea Grape at 6:00 p.m., Jones Town vs. Pinder’s Point at 6:30 p.m., and Pinedale versus Holmes Rock at 7:00 p.m.
The Open Division will close out the evening with Russell/Martin Town taking on Wellington and Sunrise at 7:00 p.m. Bartlett Hill will face Hanna Hill at 7:30 p.m., and West End will take on Pinder’s Point at 8:00 p.m.
