The Sin of Achan

Yesterday: very early in the morning as I sat and opened the Bible: Abba, Father unfolded Genesis chapter 1 to me. I could not help but picture the handiwork of God’s Creation and of how the fruit and herb were for food. Quickly, I marked the chapter and moved on to the Book of Psalms. However, while reading, Abba, Father was speaking to me and I tried to brush off His Words and could not. I quietly, rested the Bible and listened attentively. Abba, Father: said, The Sin of Achan: He took me to the Book of Joshua chapter 7 and revealed to me that His people have become unfaithful in the sacred things but still continue to partake and minister His Word. My heart grew heavy as I read of the account: beginning from, verse (1) But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things; Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel. Verse (2) Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, ‘Go up and spy out the region.” So the men went up and spied out Ai. Verse (3) When they returned to Joshua, they said, ‘Not all the people will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary all the people, for only a few men are there.” Verse (4) So about three thousand men went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai,” Verse (5) who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this, the hearts of the people melted and became like water.

Dear Reader: Take note of what is happening not only in The Bahamas but all around the Globe. The sin of lawlessness is on the increase. People are becoming lovers of themselves, lovers of pleasures and have itching ears and would rather believe a lie rather than the truth. Desolation and decay are all around us. People are hurting, many are sick and being afflicted. Numerous are being displaced, and homeless. Far too many are at their wits end so to speak. Sunday morning Services at Church are high spirited but the Power of God is not evidenced with a demonstration. Scarcely any miracles, people are sometimes more despondent after leaving the house of God. The Word is also being preached in its fullness also. Could it be that the sin of Achan is in the midst? Is the sin of Achan in our lives? Do we tolerate sin and sweep it under the rug? Is the sin of Achan in the Church? Have we been fasting and praying about the condition of our land, homes, marriages, families, Churches and Businesses and have still come up empty and frustrated? Kindly read what God told Joshua while he was on his face crying out about the condition of his people in Joshua Chapter 7 verse (7) And Joshua said, ‘ Ah, Sovereign LORD, why did you ever bring these people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! Verse (8) O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? Verse (9) The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name? Abba, Father answered Joshua in verse (10) The LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I have commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. Is it possible that we as Yahweh’s people have done these same things and dare partake of the Holy things of God: Have we been merchandising the Gospel and have made the House of God a den of thieves; when it should be a House of Prayer? Is it possible that the sin of Achan is responsible for the decline of our growth and development, healing, deliverance and blessings being manifested? Do we dilute the Word of God and compromise to please people? Is it possible that while God spoke directly to Joshua and told him the reason why the Israelites could not stand against their enemies but could it be relevant to you and I today? Verse (12) That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. God gave Joshua a command to go and consecrate the people in verse (13) Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: That which is devoted is among you, O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove it. Please read the entire chapter during your time of leisure. Have we forgotten that there is a price for sin and that it is not a man but God who will deal with us? Verse (15) He who is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the LORD and has done a disgraceful thing in Israel!” During the consecration, Achan was the one found with the accursed things. Verse (20) Achan replied it is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I have done:” Verse (21) When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.

In conclusion: Abba, Father, is calling for the sin of Achan to be dealt with and removed from our lives and in our Churches but if left unchecked there will be no growth and development, no move of God, no miracles and deliverance. As I read Genesis chapter 1, what a wonderful picture entered my mind of all of God’s Creation in it beautiful state especially the fruit and the herb which was for food. Yes, the earth, the waters and the firmament. Everything was perfect and God was pleased but sin and breaking God’s Covenant marks us for destruction. I tried to brush off Abba, Father, speaking to me but could not. It is time to call out the sin of Achan from among us: no matter who it is or suffer the consequences of being marked by God for Destruction like the Israelites, who were killed, beaten and routed in front of their enemies. The Sin of Achan must be dealt with!
