Thankful Hearts and Giving Hands

1 Thessalonians 5:18 declares that we should “give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Given the time we are living in, there is little that we can find to give thanks for. Nevertheless, the word of God admonishes us to search deeper so that we can develop a thankful heart.

Perhaps you just lost your job, nonetheless, you can yet find something to give thanks for. Think about it, you really did not like the environment you were working in, nor the people you had to work with every day. You cringed at their fake smiles and poisonous lips. Now that you have been freed there is more that your hands can find to do. After all, God has set you free to redirect your path to a job that you will love to do. Whether it is your own business you need to begin, or a college degree you need to pursue to start a new career, I encourage you to change your perspective and give thanks.

I am reminded of the Psalms of David, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise will always be on my lips (34:1).” If your marriage is in trouble lift your hands and give God a praise. Maybe you lost a loved one to death. Though a painful matter, you can yet raise your hands and give thanks. The more thanks you give the greater change you will experience in your life.

Daniel in the book of Daniel 6:10, was not moved or worried when he learned that his enemies had convinced the king to sign a document that prohibited prayer to anyone except the king. Once the document was signed, Daniel went into his house, where the windows of his upper room opened toward Jerusalem, and three times a day he got down on his knees, prayed, and gave thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Has your safety or well-being been threatened? Well, all you need to do is make your requests known to God through prayer and supplication and I promise you that just as God delivered Daniel, He will deliver you.

Moreover, although life sometimes throws us into the den of lions, we can rest assured that “whatsoever we do in word or deed,… in the name of the Lord, giving thanks to God…” He will deliver us (Colossians 3:17). During this season of Thanksgiving, let us remain focused on not only receiving with a thankful heart, but let us also seize every moment possible to give. Seek opportunities to share your time, money, efforts, advice, support, encouraging words. That way you would no longer live the remainder of your time in the flesh but to the will of God (1 Peter 4:2).
