“Quit making excuses, putting it off, complaining about it, dreaming about it, whining about it, crying about it, believing you can’t, worrying if you can, waiting until you’re older, skinnier, richer, braver, or all around better. Suck it up, hold on tight, say a prayer, make a plan and just do it.” (Motivational quotes by Nike)
There are so many people with great aspirations, contemplating stepping out in faith, starting a new career or their own business but they allow fear to hold them back; fear of failure, fear of what others may think etc. Many of these individuals have been quoting the Nike slogan, “Just Do It!” for years or even sport Nike apparel with the slogan printed on it but yet they don’t apply those words to life. I am writing to encourage you today; if there is a dream that you’ve had for some time, a passion that you’ve wanted to pursue, JUST DO IT!
I am sure that many of you may be thinking, “It’s not that easy to ‘Just Do It’!” I can certainly identify with what you are thinking, however, time has shown that the longer people wait to pursue a dream or do something that they desire to do, the higher the chances are that they may never do it.
Many people have various reasons as to why it may be better to wait. They say they should wait until the economy is more stable, wait until they have more money saved, wait until they get older etc. That ideal time may never come. The economy may become more stable, you may save more money and then you will think of another reason as to why it may be better to wait. Whatever it is that you desire to do, Just Do It!
In order to Just Do It, you must:
Be a risk taker
Risk is defined by Dictionary.com as “exposure to the chance of injury or loss” or “to venture upon; take or run the chance of.”
Making the decision to leave a seemingly stable job, start a new career or launch your own business is indeed taking a risk but if it is something that you are really passionate about, something that you believe may indeed be your purpose in life, you must be willing to take the risk and to work hard to achieve that dream.
Life is about taking risks and anything worth having is worth the risk. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook said, “The biggest risk is not taking any risk... In a world that is changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.”
A fearless person is one who is bold or brave, one who is not afraid to try anything. So many people allow fear to hold them back in life.
In 2nd Timothy Chapter 1 and verse 7 of the Bible we read that God did not give us a spirit of fear. This implies that fear is from the devil. It is the devil that is trying to hold us back, by giving us such thoughts of fear.
The main reason why most people are afraid to pursue their dreams is because of the fear of failure. The devil puts thoughts in their minds making them believe things will not work out, they will never succeed at their dreams, people will think that they are crazy and laugh at them or talk about them when they fail. Many allow these thoughts to consume them, killing their dreams before even taking the first step.
R.J. Smith said, “Nothing beats a failure but a try.” This simply means that trying and failing is much better than never trying at all. You will never know what you can achieve if you don’t try. If you try and things do not work out, you learn from your mistakes and try again. You must be persistent and not give up so easily. You must dismiss those thoughts of failure, not care about what others may think of you and be fearless.
Many thought the Wright brothers were crazy when they tried to build the first airplane but they took the risk and were fearless anyway. Thomas Eddison is said to have tried more than 10,000 times before inventing the light bulb. The popular film maker, Steven Spielberg, was rejected from film school three times before getting his big break. Oprah Winfrey was once fired from a news station as a news reporter and went on to become a billionaire, building her own network. If you were to research online you will discover many inventors and celebrities who failed numerous times before becoming successful. The one thing that they all had in common was that they were willing to take risks and they were fearless.
So many people allow their dreams to die with them because they keep putting off pursing their dreams until it is too late. A quote by Motivational Speaker Les Brown says, “The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step.”
Do not allow your dreams to die with you. Just Do It!
