It is understandable that there will be all sorts of emotional behavior and utterings during this election season. It is no secret why the campaign period leading up to general elections is called the silly season.
That phrase depicts exactly the true character of many, among the electorate. They indeed act silly and go to an extreme in being ridiculous, and disrespectful. Some actions and verbal expressions border on stupidity. Sad to say, there are definitely those who function as if they are actually stupid.
The dictionary defines the word stupid as: having or showing a great lack of intelligence or common sense. One could use words such as ignorant, dense, idiotic, imbecile, etc. to describe some on the campaign trail.
We were very recently reminded of the extent that a percentage of the voters would go, to emphasize their support for a party, and with no tolerance at all for any other view. At this time, in a civil society there are close friends who cut off normal lines of communication during “election campaign” time. Yes, we know of some family members who do not speak to each other because of politics.
Also, there are family members who use profane language when describing those kin who have a different political leaning. It’s absurd, this attitude, that too many voters hold tightly.
Prime Minister Perry Christie of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Government and Free National Movement (FNM) Leader Dr. Hubert Minnis, publically do not agree on very much. Dr. Minnis is always on the attack. Christie, his party chairman, Bradley Roberts and others are always taking critical aim at Dr. Minnis.
However the nation’s high profile political leaders are civil when they meet. Actually, there are times when they are seen sharing a joke, and obviously quite comfortable with each other.
Additionally, the two politicians with the greatest national presence since the leadership days of the late Sir Lynden Pindling, are the best of friends.
Three-time Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, and Christie, who is seeking a third opportunity to be PM, stand before the nation as the perfect example of people who agree to disagree without harboring animosity.
On the surface, they are bitter foes but a bond exists that even their most ardent political supporters can’t come close to severing.
Hubert Ingraham and Perry Christie have a “life” relationship based on the roads they have traveled together, politically, as business partners and as personal friends.
Thus, we send out a challenge to voters.
Respect should be afforded to all, no matter who wears, red, gold, green, blue or otherwise.
