Commercial diver and Bahamian ecological historian, David Rose, presented an idea which he believes could help to save lives across the length and breadth of The Bahamas, should this archipelagic nation ever experience a tsunami.
Tuesday (January 9) past, news agencies worldwide reported that a 7.8 magnitude earthquake had struck the Caribbean 125 miles northeast of Barra Patuca, Honduras and 191 miles southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands and a tsunami advisory had been put into effect for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, after the quake.
Possible, hazardous tsunami waves were also expected to effect the coasts of Jamaica, Mexico, Honduras, Cuba, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Guatemala and other territories, which could have proven quite devastating.
With The Bahamas still reeling from the effects of Hurricanes Joaquin, Matthew and Irma and tropical cyclonic activity becoming more intense and frequent, Rose noted that it is only a matter of time before a catastrophic tsunami occurs.
But, he added, Bahamians and residents could act now to safeguard against loss of life and much more, if they heed his advice and construct on land Caissons or Diving Bells at strategic locations throughout the communities of Grand Bahama and the Family Islands.
Now while the idea may seem peculiar or something derived from science fiction, Rose noted that with a little ingenuity, study and reasoning, he intends to illustrate how Basic Tsunami-Rising Water Safe Survival theory can become a science fact.
“Beginning as far back as 1975 during my time in diving school, I was exposed to a great deal of technology as well as the industrial work of what is now Statoil and I did some work there too.
“The first thing I was introduced to was diving systems and one of the most important diving systems for the past few centuries, has involved the ability to build legs for bridges such as the Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges with the use of Caissons.
“A Caisson Vessel is a pressurized vessel that is airtight at the top, air is blown into it and it is lowered into water and fixed solidly to the bottom by a strong fixture that does not allow it to move,” Rose explained.
“Once air is blown into the unit it removes water and the bottom of the Caisson Vessel is completely hollow; it eventually allows for man to go inside the vessel through an air lock at the top and walk down a ladder to get to the very bottom.
“This is where diving began its technological understanding of the physiology of the same and, the first disease that arose then, was Caisson’s Disease also known as Divers’ Disease or the Bends.”
According to Rose, the Caisson allowed people to stand at 70ft below the San Francisco Bay and many bridges were built at much shallower crossings as water was all they had to cross over.
“The Caisson technology has advanced a bit in fact, it is just a highly developed form of Isaac Newton’s Diving Bell, which was first used in 1757, was a system which allowed people to go underwater, live and breathe,” Rose revealed.
A Diving Bell is a hermetically seal dome (airtight) and Rose noted, air could be pumped into it allowing people to live and work underwater. While Isaac Newton’s studies were not about diving but instead gravity and buoyancy, his work led to miraculous discoveries, which could be used to help save lives in The Bahamas should a tsunami hit.
Keen on introducing basic tsunami-rising water safe survival theory not only to Bahamians but the world, Rose based his studies and patented idea on Isaac Newton’s Law of Gravity and Archimedes’ Law of Buoyancy.
According to Rose, by putting a Diving Bell on land, when the consuming wave and hydro-dynamic forces pass through and knocks down ordinary structures, the bell well fixed to the bedrock though surrounded by water will provide a refuge of safety for personnel infrastructure command and control systems by the ocean side.
Furthermore, he suggested that size is irrelevant, as physics is the controller.
“Isaac Newton’s studies showed that he was a space man possessing knowledge that was 250 years ahead of his time.
“He went into water like spacemen do today, which is an almost weightless environment to conduct and prove his findings.
“Now personally, I am not talking about any of those instruments that have been used by scientist in these two technological endeavors, but, simply, we can be saved by producing a Tsunami Dome,” Rose said.
“The dome would basically be the exact same device (Caisson/Diving Bell) put on land, concreted down making the entrance at the bottom hermetically sealed (airtight) and our flat country could be protected from tsunamis.
“The idea is using the advance warning systems by international news and weather agencies, people would go into the dome long in advance of a tsunami and be saved.
“If a Tsunami Dome were built at every church throughout our communities across the country the Bahamian population, special historic artifacts and other pertinent things could be saved from destruction.
“Honestly, if we do not build domes like this the government would have to simply replace the population and I have had knowledge of this technology since the age of 22 years old.
“Now the idea dawned on me while I was tinkering with a project that would involve building hyperbaric dome systems for health purposes; building a dome hermetically sealed (airtight) at the water for easy entry.
“Raising the pressure in the dome would force the water down, by increasing the pressure 25 Psi changing the O2 mixture to 40 percent and reduce the Nitrogen mixture to 60 percent then, the Psi would be 10 percent higher, the O2 would be doubled and healing properties of this would be magnificent; and that is when I realized that this could be used as a Tsunami Dome,” Rose said.
While persons may believe Rose’s idea is unusual, he notes that it does give much food for thought and serious consideration.
Based on his more than 60 years of experience and having had the unique privilege of witnessing firsthand the transformative growth and development of Grand Bahama and its natural waterways inclusive of the Hawksbill Creek, Gold Rock Creek and several others, Rose’s consultative insight has been sought after and used in studies carried out by National Geographic right here in The Bahamas.
Pointing out other examples, which he claims helps to solidify his idea process, Rose noted, “The Fukushima Power Plant in Japan failed, because the generators that backed up the systems after a major event like this were in the basement when it went underwater.
“Had on land and on-site Tsunami Domes with generators, back-up systems, command and control systems been in, it would have not failed.
“The truth is hotels in our country should have domes like this, because if/when we have a tsunami it is going to be a terrible disaster. Tsunamis have struck every single coastline in all of the timeless eras of our planet and scientists have proven this archaeologically and without a doubt hermetically sealed domes (Tsunami Domes Caisson/Diving Bell) are the answer.
“One of these domes could be built in your home, it matters not how big it is, your house can be swept away. However, as long as you are in it you would remain safe; concrete is one of the major by-products of our country and domes made by Goldrock Creek would be so strong it could withstand a Category 5 Hurricane or tornado, thus creating a whole new environmental way of looking at building.”
With Global Warming and other factors leading to rising waters, fiercer storms and flooding becoming commonplace, Rose said, this is something that should be seriously looked into, as he emphatically believes this is the answer.
