Young chef steps out the box and opens ‘On da ROX 242’

COOKING IT UP – Chef Jasmine Roxbury prepares one of her delicious dishes during the grand opening of her restaurant, On da ROX 242.

The name of private chef Jasmine Roxbury, has quickly become synonymous with mouthwatering, impeccably presented dishes throughout the island of Grand Bahama for a number of years. Her dedicated and quality service in the field of cuisine, which she has a profound passion for, has catapulted her catering business into a one of a kind venture that has not only garnered attention locally, but internationally as well.

Recently, the budding entrepreneur took her passion a step further, thinking outside the box, to open her very own restaurant and bar aptly named, ‘On da ROX 242.’

On da ROX 242, located at the Grand Bahama Yacht Club on Midshipman Road, was officially opened recently where a number of residents, some new to Roxbury’s delectable dishes while many were returning tasty dishes fans, assembled to celebrate with the young chef in her latest endeavor.

One of those in attendance was Deputy Prime Minister K. Peter Turnquest, Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for East Grand Bahama, who along with his wife, Sonia, personally congratulated the Bahamian ‘Celebrity Chef’ and encouraged all in attendance to support Roxbury and other young Bahamian entrepreneurs in their ventures, to ensure their success.

“We are now creating an environment that will facilitate persons like Jasmine, who are willing to take the risk, who are willing to put in the work and now ready to launch into the world.

“I want you to join with me, in celebrating her, pledging that we will continue to support her and to promote her business, because we all know success in business has a lot to do with luck and hard work, but it also has a lot to do with networking and word of mouth.

“I want you to join with me in committing to helping Jasmine get the word out about this wonderful establishment and about the quality of her service that persons will experience here,” said Turnquest.

“I want to encourage you to come out and support her and to continue to support the other Bahamian businesses who have rode through the hard times, and as we see the pendulum swinging back the other way, towards prosperity, to participate and support our own.

“Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado I want you to raise your glasses with me and celebrate new beginnings, celebrate this young, vibrant entrepreneur; celebrate this new business venture here on Midshipman (Road).”

Roxbury thanked all in attendance for their unwavering support over the years. “On behalf of myself and my business partner, Sirvano Curtis, we would like to thank each and every one of you for coming out and supporting us. A lot of persons have asked me, after catering, when I was going to open my own place.

“I was so committed to sticking to my guns that I would never go back into a kitchen, but there was a little birdie that kept whispering in my ear (that would not shut up) and convinced me that maybe now was the time to step out of the box and try something new. We then came up with, ‘On da ROX 242.’

“I want to thank my parents, Sirvano’s parents, our family and friends, everyone, our BWA staff and everyone else who facilitated this night,” said Roxbury.

She informed attendees that they can look forward to On da ROX 242 providing unique quality cuisine, for all to enjoy.

“We will have amazing nights, try and do new things as much as possible to try and revive the environment, and try to get Bahamians out of the house. For those of you who have had my food in the past, I am not a typical Bahamian chef at all.

“I am not what they call a ‘Peas and Rice Chef,’ and so you are guaranteed to always have something new, fresh and different. We promise that we are going to provide the best service, best food and best quality that you will find on the island.

Everyone knows that we are very easy to talk to and so if you have a suggestion, if there is something that is not on the menu and you want to see it, we can put in on the special and we can even name it after you. We are trying to make it as happy and as comfortable as possible, a welcoming environment. Everyone is welcomed here at On da ROX,” said added.

On da ROX 242 is open noon to 9:00 p.m. weekdays and 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and closed on Wednesdays.
