Residents on the island gathered at a Technology Entertainment Design and Independently Organized Event (TEDx) conference on Saturday (February 4) at the Pelican Bay Hotel in Grand Bahama.
Katarlah Taylor, Co-organizer of TEDx along with Earle Taylor told this daily that the event was a platform for Bahamians to come and share their ideas.
“Today’s event is taking place under the theme, ‘If When.’ So we have speakers from a multidisciplinary approach who are sharing ideas on if we did x then y would happen,” she said.
The first speaker was Dr. Sam Heastie, who spoke on a ‘Four Dimensional Love.’ Taylor explained that he challenged the audience to rethink how they conduct their relationships for the betterment of our lives.
Other speakers were Trenicka Rolle whose topic was ‘Bright Minds: Illuminating Education Via STEM’ and Jehan Unwala who spoke about how ‘Reading makes a nation great.’
Taylor shared that earlier that week TEDx hosted another event called TEDx Youth at Grand Bahama, which is the youth branch of the event. According to her over 300 local high school students attended the event which was held under the theme ‘What If.’
“We had two student speakers and two adult speakers,” she said.
She stated that this is an annual event and hopefully they would be back next year.
“This event is run by all volunteers and we really rely heavily on the community for sponsorship to bring this event together,” she said.
Taylor stated that she hopes more people would come and support the speakers and the initiative because TED is a global platform with millions of subscribers and thousands of talks to watch. She revealed that they now have eight videos made by Bahamians represented in this platform and because of the latest event they would have 16 videos. So far those videos have been viewed over 15,000 times.
The TEDx Program is designed to help communities, organizations and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences.
TEDx events consist of a screening of TED Talks videos, or a combination of live presenters and TED Talks videos. TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently, under a free license granted by TED.
Taylor took the opportunity to thank their sponsors and everyone who showed up to support the event. Those sponsors included; Bellevue Business Depot, Burger King, Express Foodmart, the F.E.E.D Center, Freeport Oil Company Limited (FOCOL), the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA), Halls Electrical Supplies, Lucy’s Pool & Lawn System LTD, PharmaChem Technologies, Pelican Bay Hotel, Pizza Hut, Paint Fair, Spartan Builders, Nesbitt Rentals, and Sire’s Restaurant & Bar.
