There are five loves

1 Corinthians 13:13, “And now abideth faith, hope and love, these three… but the greatest of these is LOVE.”

The English language is very deficient in expressing the essence of certain words. The romantic languages: French, Spanish and Latin are much more passionate and explicit.

Love is such a word.

If we look at the word paces as an acronym, we might understand better what love is. As today (as I write this) is Valentine’s Day and the year 5777, “the year of Jubilee” and a leap year - love is in the air.

There are five loves:

Philos love may also be defined as a great liking. For example I love my dogs Abaco and LucayJAH. Philos is a love of things.

Agape. This is God’s love - the love that passes all understanding. It is the love that loves the unlovely; it loves the person even if it hates their attitudes etc.

Charity. In the old King James version it is used as love, but it really has to do with benevolence - giving to the poor and needy - the displaced and the debilitated.

Eros. This is that love wives have for husbands and vice versa, husbands for their spouse

Sorge. This is the love for family - a mother’s love. For example I love my newborn son, Rashaad JAH Z. This love is so profound that a mother flung her body over her baby in a plane crash.

Love unrequited. Sometimes love is a one-way street. We all have experienced (I know I have) loving some person who does not love you in return. This can be heart rending.

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave …”

Selfish love is not love at all. Love is a giving thing, not a getting thing.

Dangerous love. Men feel unrequited love more deeply and passionately than do women. There is an island in the Caribbean where they have defined it threefold.

1. FuFu. This is that very early and often infantile, love felt when the woman leaves her man for little or no reason. It is foolish as the name implies.

2. TaBanker - This is a more serious love situation when you receive the “Dear John Letter.” She is leaving you for some other man. The man is often seen depressed and losing weight.

3. TotalBay - This is that often, tragic situation when the lover feels that he cannot live without her. He will either kill himself or as you hear in the headlines, commit murder-suicide. In some cases if they had children together, he will kill the kids as well.

Therefore, of all the words in 1 Corinthians 13 (please read it in your red and white out-fit). Love never fails.

Happy Belated Valentine!
