The typical New Year’s resolution … Dieting

For the New Year, most Bahamians have resolutions, which disappear quickly by the time Valentine’s Day comes along. But recently, I have been impressed that Oprah Winfrey has lost over 45 pounds and has maintained it. Being one of the richest women in America, perhaps the richest black woman billionaire, she epitomizes the phrase that health is more important than wealth. 


In researching the many diets that have come along, it has been my opinion that EATING FAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU FAT!” Sugar and salt with oversize portions and lack of daily exercise does. Dr. Oz and Dr. Gupta have both come out on television with guidelines, especially to their female audiences, with plans that will make it possible to maintain the whole year through and indeed into another year. As Obama says, “yes you can!” 


Basic guidelines are as follows:

Aim to lose weight slower, but surely and this begins with breakfast. This is indeed the most important meal of the day. Good beginnings make good endings. My motto for the year is: “If God (JAH) don’t make it, don’t take it.” In other words, I am advocating that you eat more fruits and vegetables, raw, and in most cases in their skin. You should drink more water, less juices and sodas; and your water should be alkaline in nature. Water should be at room temperature and a minimum eight of the eight ounces glasses.


“Fast cannot be good.” “Good cannot be cheap.” “Cheap cannot be healthy.” By this, the guideline is to avoid fast foods and be prepared to pay a little more at the supermarket or farm or even better, do it yourself (DIY). It is time Bahamians realize that growing their own garden is not only health wise, but pocket wise and can be quite a joyful occupation. Are you not aware that The Bahamas, historically, is the best place to grow pineapples and tomatoes? 


Be prepared that as a natural process, you may put back on some weight; but aim to lose more than you gain. Old habits die hard – like drinking wine on a daily basis and of course, those troublesome but tasty beers. 


Don’t be fooled by the light sign on the beer. They are all fattening. We all have cravings and the idea is not to make your dieting unpleasant. So give yourself permission to eat a little and savor a little of those things like yogurt and even cake from time-to-time. This is often called the 80/20 rule. 


My simple solutions: stop eating in front of the television, because the many companies make the food look so good that we are all tempted to sip the sweets, while we sit. Do not pick between meals. Stop snacking! 


There are three things that simplify exercise in our beautiful Bahamian environment. They are walking, swimming and bicycle riding. I often recommend the attention of a skipping rope to get rid of those fat arms and sides. The so-called “love handles.” When exercising on the road please wear light color clothing. Preferably cotton in nature and more ideally, wear a radiolucent jacket. They are very inexpensive. 


Here follows Dr. Roopi’s new chemical diet plan. It is for three days at a time and one should lose 10 pounds in three days. Then one is allowed four days of normal eating so that the body follows a normal pattern


Day 1 Sunday:

Breakfast: Black coffee/tea (no cream or sugar), 1/2 grapefruit, 1 slice toast, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter.

Lunch: 1/2 cup tuna, 1 slice toast

Dinner: 2 slices of any kind of meat (2oz), 1 Cup string beans, 1 cup beets, 1 small apple, 1 cup vanilla ice cream.


Day 2 Monday:

Breakfast: Black coffee/tea (no cream or sugar), 1 egg, 1 slice toast, 1/2 cup banana.

Lunch: 1 cup cottage cheese, 5 saltine crackers.

Dinner: 2 hot dogs, 1 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup carrots, 1/2 cup banana, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream.


Day 3 Tuesday:

Breakfast: Black coffee/tea (no cream or sugar), 3 saltine crackers and cheddar cheese, 1 small apple.

Lunch: 1 hard boiled egg, 1 slice toast.

Dinner: 1 cup tuna, 1 cup beets, 1 cup cauliflower, 1/2 cantaloupe, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream.
